Causes of High Cholesterol

The main cause to be found behind high cholesterol is a result of a diet that is high in saturated fat. Eating foods that are greasy or maintaining a diet that is high in meats such as beef and eggs put a rise in cholesterol levels. Of course, there are other causes behind elevated cholesterol levels as well. By being overweight or having a low activity level you put yourself at risk as well. Other factors that can lead to this are whether or not you smoke, your gender, and your age. People that are over the age of 20 experience a natural increase in their cholesterol. Men are more prone to being faced with higher cholesterol than women are. Genetics can also play a role in how high your levels of cholesterol as well since those that have a history of high cholesterol in their family are more likely to experience it themselves.

Good Cholesterol vs. Bad Cholesterol

Cholesterol lipoproteins are divided into three main types: low density lipoproteins, high density lipoproteins, and triglycerides. Low density lipoproteins are considered bad cholesterol because it can gather in the arteries for the heart and brain and cause blocks and clots which lead to serious afflictions like strokes and heart attacks. High density lipoproteins are what are known as the ‘good cholesterol’. Contrary to the former mentioned cholesterol type, high density lipoproteins can help prevent heart attacks and strokes. This is because it can help prevent the harmful build up of cholesterol in the arteries, allowing them more flexibility and less chance of clotting. The last type of lipoprotein is a triglyceride. Triglycerides form blood fat and a high level of triglycerides usually is associated with a high level of both good and bad cholesterol.
